At the outbreak of World War I, New Zealand immediately began sending troops to fight with Britain and Australia. The New Zealand Expeditionary Force was the title given to all military forces sent from New Zealand. These nominal rolls provide an index of soldiers and other individuals who embarked from New Zealand as part of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during World War I. The rolls cover embarkations from 1914 to 1918, and are grouped by embarkation date ranges. Initially, the force was reinforced by volunteers, but conscription was introduced in August 1916.
By the end of the war, approximately 124,000 New Zealanders had served in the NZEF, nearly half of the eligible male population of 250,000. About 100,000 were sent overseas to fight in France, Belgium, Egypt, Palestine, and Gallipoli. Nearly 17,000 died of wounds or sickness while on active service during the war, and another 35,000 were wounded.

VI THE TREASURIES LANDING
Just as dawn was breaking the reconnaissance personnel of RHQ and the two batteries transhipped from the APDs to small barges and followed the first wave of infantry in after an interval of ten minutes. By the time the barges were under way the supporting naval bombardment had started and although it turned out later that the fire had done little damage, its moral effect was good. The parties walked ashore just west of Falamai Point on Mono Island to find that the infantry had pushed ahead into the jungle, leaving the beach apparently quiet and deserted No sooner, however, had the regimental and battery report centres been set up than a hail of fire ranging up and down the beaches PAGE 122drove all ranks to ground at the double. The first wave of infantry left a few isolated enemy strong-points near Falamai and one of these caused some trouble to the reconnaissance parties of E and H troops of the 208th Battery when they landed from the LCIs. The two troop commanders, Lieutenants H. W. Milne and J. Lendrum, promptly organised a bayonet charge and Gunner M. J. Compton, showing great initiative, shot at least three of the Japs and earned for himself the Military Medal the only decoration for bravery won by the regiment. Even after the charge some of the enemy held out and Gunner Compton tried again to get at them with grenades. They were very well sheltered, however, and it took a bulldozer to crush the nest and put it out of action.

Alan CaneLendrum: Fought in the First World War - rank of Captain of the Third Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He was awarded the Military Cross (MC) and Bar.
The Great War which started in August 1914, found the First Battalion in India and the Second in Dover, the latter going to France in the Fourth Division which was amongst those to be heavily engaged at the Battle of LeCateau. The First Battalion was part of the Incomparable Twenty-ninth Division which won undying fame at the landing at Helles on the Gallipoli peninsula in April 1915, and later on the Western Front. Nine New Army battalions were raised during the war all of which took part in the great battles in France and Flanders between 1915 and 1918, while two of them saw much service in Gallipoli, Macedonia and Palestine as well. During those eventful years the Regiment was awarded eight Victoria Crosses.

Lieutenant Colonel Richard Lendrum
Cabeldu decided to feed the Royal Regiment of Canada in to seize the smaller bridge. "Gentlemen, when we have secured Groningen, we effectively will have severed Holland from Germany," Lieutenant Colonel Richard Lendrum told his officers in a briefing that 4th Canadian Field Regiment FOO Captain George Blackburn heard through a haze of exhaustion. Before Lendrum finished, he nodded off. Waking thirty minutes before the attack, he saw the Royal's company commanders all sprawled about on the floor of the farmhouse in a similar stupor.

William Lendrum "Billy" Mitchell(December 28, 1879 February 19, 1936) was an American Army general who is regarded as the father of the U.S. Air Force. He is one of the most famous and most controversial figures in the history of American air power.
Mitchell served in France during the First World War and, by the conflict's end, commanded all American air combat units in that country. After the war, he was appointed deputy director of the Air Service and began advocating increased investment in air power, believing that this would prove vital in future wars. He argued particularly for the ability of bombers to sink battleships and organized a series of bombing runs against stationary ships designed to test the idea.
He antagonized many people in the Army with his arguments and criticism and, in1925, was returned to his permanent rank of Colonel. Later that year, he was court-martialed for insubordination after accusing Army and Navy leaders of an "almost treasonable administration of the national defense." Here signed from the service shortly afterward.
Mitchell received many honors following his death, including a commission by the President as a Major General. He is also the only individual after whom a type of American military aircraft, the B-25Mitchell, is named.
